Oomoyo vs Traccar
A family map where only your family can read the locations, next to the open-source server for tracking GPS devices.
Traccar is free and open-source GPS tracking software with very wide device support. You can run it on your own server or have it hosted for you, and it has been released regularly through 2026 [1][2][19]. It is the right tool when you want full control of a server that talks to many kinds of GPS trackers. Oomoyo is a different kind of product: a group map for families, where each person joins on their own phone and agrees to share, and where the server cannot read the locations. Oomoyo runs on iPhone and Android, plus the web console as a Linked browser.
Differences that matter
What each is made for
Traccar describes general GPS tracking: a server for GPS trackers and phones, with alerts and reports for things like ignition, fuel drops, maintenance and driver changes; the site also speaks to businesses that want to start a GPS tracking business [1][13]. Accounts are full-access accounts, managers and regular users, and a manager can share devices and geofences with the users they manage [11]. Oomoyo is made for a family or another small group of people who know each other. Each person joins on their own phone, accepts for themselves and can see who sees them. There are four roles: owner, guardian, member and managed member, where guardians decide for a managed member, who can always send an SOS and leave. No email address is needed to start.
What the server can read
Traccar stores positions in a database and builds its reports from the stored positions [14][16]. If you run Traccar yourself, you hold that database. If you use the hosted service, Traccar's privacy policy says it processes device identifiers, locations and timestamps for you and keeps hosted location records for up to one year by default [9]. Traccar does not offer end-to-end encryption of positions. In Oomoyo every update from a phone is encrypted on the phone with Messaging Layer Security, an open standard (RFC 9420), before it leaves the phone, so only your family's own devices can read it. The server still sees when a phone last checked in, deadline times and days (not the place), the SOS flag and push tokens. A linked browser, a webhook and Home Assistant are named plainly in Oomoyo and are not end-to-end encrypted: what you share with them is readable wherever they run.
What you can connect, and how you run it
Traccar's reach is wide. It supports more than 200 protocols and, according to its repository, 2000+ device models, and you can turn a phone into a tracker with Traccar Client [3][6][17]. Oomoyo works with phones and with trackers that encrypt their own reports. Kids' 4G watches work only on a paid self-hosted server whose operator turned the watch receiver on; Oomoyo's own service and free self-hosted servers never accept them. Traccar runs on a server you choose or on a hosted service [2][8]. Oomoyo runs its own service, proudly EU-hosted, and you can host the server yourself with the same Oomoyo apps.
How they compare
| Feature | Oomoyo | Traccar |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Families and small groups of people who agree to share with each other. | General GPS tracking. Its pages describe a server for GPS trackers and phones, with alerts for ignition, fuel and maintenance and reports of trips and stops [1][13][14] |
| How you run it | Run by Oomoyo on its own service, or on a server you host yourself, with the same Oomoyo apps. | Run it yourself on Windows, Linux or other platforms, on your own hardware or in the cloud, or use the hosted service that Traccar manages [2][8]. Install options include a Docker image [4] |
| Devices and protocols | Phones, and trackers that encrypt their own reports ("Encrypted on the device"). Kids' 4G watches ("Encrypted on arrival") only on a paid self-hosted server whose operator turned the watch receiver on; Oomoyo's own service and free self-hosted servers never accept them. | More than 200 protocols; trackers from most major manufacturers; 2000+ device models according to the repository [3][6] |
| Phone apps | iPhone and Android, plus the web console as a Linked browser. | Traccar Client turns an Android or iOS phone into a tracker; Traccar Manager, for Android and iOS, manages devices and needs a Traccar server [17][18] |
| What the server can read | Scrambled locations only. It sees check-in times, deadline times and days, the SOS flag and push tokens. | Positions are stored in a database and used for reports [14][16]. Hosted records are kept up to one year by default [9]. The web interface and API run over plain HTTP by default; the documentation shows how to add HTTPS behind a proxy [15] |
| Metadata | The content of your updates and your IP address are never seen. Online times and which groups an account updates and reads are seen live and never kept. Who sent which update, who is in which group and presence records are never kept. | The hosted service processes device identifiers, locations, timestamps, telemetry, account details and notifications, and its statistics endpoint records the sending IP address; logs have no fixed retention period [9] |
| Places and alerts | Places with arrive and leave alerts, and check-in deadlines such as "tell me if Mila is not at School by 08:15". | Geofences as polygons, polylines or circles with Geofence Entered and Exited events; notifications by email, push, SMS and other channels you set up [12][13] |
| History | The guardian picks how long history is kept, from none up; every member can choose less for their own data and delete it. | Route, Trips, Stops and Summary reports from stored positions; export where supported [14]. Hosted records are kept up to one year by default [9]; on your own server you hold the database [16] |
| Sharing and roles | Four roles. Each person joins on their own phone and accepts for themselves; guardians decide for managed members. | Accounts with full access, managers and regular users; managers share devices and geofences with the users they manage; a Read-Only setting [11] |
| SOS | Alerts your family with your live position. It does not call the emergency services; if you are in danger, call 112. | SOS is one of the alarm types a device can report [13] |
| Temporary sharing | A link labelled "Shared by link", for a babysitter or grandparent. | The API has a call to share a device's location until an expiry time [7] |
| Web access | A linked browser ("Linked browser") shows the map and does the lighter things; it cannot send an SOS or let people in. | Use it from a desktop or mobile browser [1] |
| Integrations | Webhooks and Home Assistant as an Integration, each named plainly and never called end-to-end encrypted. | A documented API and single sign-on with OpenID [4] |
| Licence and source code | The server is open source under AGPL-3.0. | Free and open source; Apache-2.0 on the server repository, with the source public [5][6][7] |
| Company and hosting | Proudly EU-hosted. Our servers run in the EU, under EU privacy law. | Services are provided by Tananaev Solutions, a trade name of Anton Tananaev, in Redwood City, California [10]. Its privacy policy says hosted tracking is with Hetzner in Germany or Finland [9] |
When Traccar may suit you better
- You track vehicles, equipment or other things with dedicated GPS trackers. Traccar supports more than 200 protocols and 2000+ device models, and its alerts and reports cover ignition, fuel and trips [3][6][13][14]. Oomoyo works with phones, trackers that encrypt their own reports and, on a paid self-hosted server, kids' 4G watches.
- You want detailed reports on trips and stops, with export [14]. Oomoyo's history lets you step through a person's day on the map; it has no trip or stop reports.
- You want to choose where and how the database runs. Traccar supports PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, MySQL, MariaDB and Microsoft SQL Server [4][16].
Questions
Is Traccar end-to-end encrypted?
Traccar stores positions in a database and builds its reports from them [14][16]. Traccar does not offer end-to-end encryption of positions. By default Traccar serves its web interface and API over plain HTTP, and its documentation shows how to add HTTPS behind a proxy [15]. If you run it yourself, you are the one who holds the data. In Oomoyo, phones are end-to-end encrypted: only your family's own devices can read an update.
Can I use my phone with Traccar?
Yes. Traccar Client turns an Android or iOS phone into a tracker. By default it connects to Traccar's demo server, and you can point it to your own server [17]. Oomoyo is a group map with apps of its own on iPhone and Android, and a web console.
Is Traccar open source, and is Oomoyo?
Traccar describes itself as free and open source, and its server repository shows the Apache-2.0 licence [5][6]. Oomoyo's server is open source under AGPL-3.0, so you can read the code and run it yourself.
Can I run Oomoyo on my own server?
Yes. The server is open source and a self-hosted server works with the same Oomoyo apps. Kids' 4G watches work only on a paid self-hosted server whose operator turned the watch receiver on.
Where does Oomoyo keep my data, and what does it see?
Proudly EU-hosted. Our servers run in the EU, under EU privacy law. What Oomoyo stores is sealed so only your family's devices can read it. The content of your updates and your IP address are never seen. Online times and which groups an account updates and reads are seen live and never kept. Who sent which update, who is in which group and presence records are never kept. For comparison, Traccar's privacy policy says its hosted tracking is with Hetzner in Germany or Finland [9].
Can I use Oomoyo and Traccar together?
Yes. They are separate products and do not depend on each other. You can keep Traccar for vehicles and equipment and use Oomoyo for your family.
